Bio: Dr. Sam Christian
Dr. Christian has performed hundreds of hernias repairs, appendectomies, gallbladder surgeries, breast and bowel cancer surgeries among others. Why then, is he not allowed to operate at Princess Margaret Hospital?
Samuel Christian graduated from the Dominica Grammar School and Sixth Form College. A early activist like his brother Gabriel, Sam served as president of the United Student Council and Secretary General of the National Youth Council. During that time he organized prototype community work camps to Kalinago Territory and Petite Savanne. He also published articles while co-hosting the DBS youth program 'Motion.' Mr. Christian taught at the Wesley High School from 1975-1977 and strove to improve conditions at the former St. Luke's Psychiatric Hospital as president of the Dominica Association of Mental Health.
He obtained a Bachelors of Science with honours (Biochemistry) in Georgia. He directed aid back home in the form of a chill box, Cadillac hearse and other equipment which revolutionized Dominica's funeral industry. Dr. Christian graduated from Howard University College of Medicine in Washington DC and went to train as a general surgeon in New Jersey. While there, he organized and help operate on the first Dominican living donor kidney transplant on brother and sister from the Philbert family of La Plaine. Dr. Christian was selected the top surgical intern in the state of New Jersey in 1985.
Dr. Christian was certified by the American Board of Surgery in 1991.
Dr. Christian was the first to introduce laparoscopic gallbladder surgery to Princess Margaret Hospital in 1993 when he donated equipment and taught Dr. Paul the procedure. In 2005, he was featured on the Discovery Channel viewed internationally. Dr. Christian had accomplished a record-breaking 1000 pound weight loss in a super-morbidly obese patient. Arising from that, in 2007, he published his breakthrough faith and fitness nutrition book, 'Mannafast Miracle.' As Medical Director of the Gibsonburg Morbid Obesity Unit, he was managing up to 50 patients hailing from a dozen different states around America. Also in San Francisco 2007, he qualified in Medical Acupuncture. This capability since added a much sought-after holistic approach to his medical practice.
Dr. Christian and his family performed relief work medical missions on Native American reservations in Arizona and in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. He volunteered for U.S. Army Reserves where he served as Battalion Surgeon of the 983 Combat Engineers Support Hospital. He qualified in Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) and war surgery as he rose to the rank of Major. He obtained an honourable discharge from the Army rather than serve in what he considered to be an unjust war in Iraq.
Thereafter, he threw himself into the bitter battle for health care reform in the United States. He led demonstrations and became known as a leading campaigner for effective treatment options for the poor and addicted. Many patients went on record that he saved their lives and brought new hope to their families.

Dr. Christian was also known for his outspoken comments how to advance Dominica. As a result he was greeted with suspicion and blocked from performing surgery at Princess Margaret Hospital. Nevertheless, Dr. Sam's wide experience in general medicine, positioned him well to introduce the emerging concept of urgent care. He inserts permanent dialysis catheters in his surgery so that patients do not have to travel overseas for the procedure. Dr. Christian's Medical Minute is a regular feature Dominica Catholic Radio. He continues his passion for developing youth by volunteering as Medical Officer of the Dominica Cadet Corps. He has embarked on a program to teach basic lifesaving throughout the country by "going in every school, every church, every village and every social organization." In so doing, Dominica in time will be designated Top Lifesaver Country (TLC) - the nation with the highest percentage of the population trained in CPR & Heimlich maneuver. He links caring with academic excellence as professor at the Dominica State College and All Saints University School of Medicine. Like many other Dominicans he was active in Tropical Storm Erika relief on opened his doors to evacuees.
Despite it's shortcomings, Dominica has done well over various administrations to evolve a health system that makes it the top-rated predominantly black nation. It ranks 35th in the world, according to the World Health Organization. Incredibly, it therefore out-performs even the United States (37), Cuba (39) and the second best CARICOM country, Barbados (46). Dr. Christian seizes this opportunity as he sees it as no better time to be part of this unique public-private partnership.
